A suspected child rapist has insisted that his white lawyer from the Legal Aid Board be replaced with a black lawyer.

The 42-year-old man told the Phalaborwa regional court on Tuesday that he didn't like white people.

"I can't stand trial when I'm represented by a white man because I don't like whites and we don't understand each other," he said.

The case was then postponed to March 23 for a new lawyer to be appointed. The magistrate agreed to replace the white lawyer, saying it was important that the accused felt he had a fair trial.
