Quem abre hoje o Google, depara com uma efígie estilizada, simbolizando personagem de romance policial: Sherlock Holmes, cujos métodos investigativos encontram quase uma metáfora no próprio Google: a procura de pistas conduz quase sempre a algo interessante e muitas vezes à verdade esclarecida.
O criador da personagem, o escritor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, nasceu em 22.5.1859 e é para o sítio da sua biografia, que remete o Google de hoje.
De acordo com o próprio autor, uma das suas melhores aventuras, é a que em português do Brasil se intitulou Os Fidalgos de Reigate.
O texto da historieta é do domínio público e começa assim:
The Reigate Puzzle
It was some time before the health of my friend Mr. SherlockHolmes recovered from the strain caused by his immense exer-tions in the spring of '87. The whole question of the Netherland-Sumatra Company and of the colossal schemes of BaronMaupertuis are too recent in the minds of the public, and are toointimately concerned with politics and finance to be fitting sub-jects for this series of sketches. They led, however, in an indirectfashion to a singular and complex problem which gave my friendan opportunity of demonstrating the value of a fresh weaponamong the many with which he waged his lifelong battle againstcrime. On referring to my notes I see that it was upon the fourteenthof April that l received a telegram from Lyons which informedme that Holmes was lying ill in the Hotel Dulong. Withintwenty-four hours I was in his sick-room and was relieved to findthat there was nothing formidable in his symptoms. Even his ironconstitution, however, had broken down under the strain of aninvestigation which had extended over two months, during whichperiod he had never worked less than fifteen hours a day and hadmore than once, as he assured me ( continua).
