In view of the unpopularity of the coalition government, comprising the Social Democratic Party and the Popular Party, the Economist Intelligence Unit expects the main opposition party, the Socialist Party (PS), to win the election. The election date has been set for February 20th. We expect the PS to win and to form a government, possibly with an absolute majority—the first time Portugal will have had a majority government for more than a decade.
