LONDON (AFP) - Britain's defence ministry defended a decision to pay for an ex-servicewoman to train to be an erotic "pole dancer", arguing it had a duty to help former troops return to civilian life.
Stephanie Hulme, a former senior aircraftwoman in the Royal Air Force (RAF), received 2,290 pounds (3,350 euros, 4,300 dollars) to train as a pole dancer, newspaper reports said. After learning to pole dance -- a routine generally seen in strip clubs in which scantily clad women drape themselves suggestively around a pole in time to music -- the 23-year-old was now working in a London club. Using the stage-name "Kitty", Hulme makes up to 500 pounds a night, she told the papers.
The main opposition Conservative Party criticised the re-training Monday.

LONDON (AFP) - Love doesn't come cheap in Britain where the typical date costs 200 pounds (295 euros, 375 dollars), according to a survey of some of the nation's 8.6 million "singletons". On average, the single British man or woman goes out on a date five times a year, with the Welsh the keenest date hunters, spending more on looking for that someone special in bars and clubs.
London is the lonely hearts capital with 33 percent more single people than other parts of Britain, even though the cost of a date there is almost 50 percent more expensive. YouGov, an opinion polling institute, questioned 2,473 people on their dating habits for Maestro, a debit card operator. The survey revealed that 60 percent of men still feel compelled to appear chivalrous and pay for dinner.
This is offset by a woman's pre-date preening expenses. On average, ladies will spend 90 pounds on, for instance, a new outfit, a trip to the hairdresser, make-up and lingerie.
Office romances are blossoming, with 42 percent of Britons saying they look for love at work. But 56 percent said they are most likely to meet their potential partner in a bar or club. Only 15 percent use modern techniques, such as Internet dating and speed dating, to pinpoint a partner.
